Deadly Cyclone Kills 1,000s in Burma
Tragedy struck the country of Burma last week. A deadly cyclone hit that country killing as many as 100,000 people and leaving a more than million homeless. A cyclone is the name for a hurricane that strikes earth below the equator. This cyclone, called Nargis, brought waves big enough to wash away entire villages. Winds blew down homes and cut off the power.
After a storm that big hits an area, the people are desperate for food, drinking water and medicine. Organizations like the United Nations and the International Red Cross rush to help.
In this case, there isn't enough help for the survivors of the cyclone. The government of Burma is a military dictatorship that calls its nation Myanmar. Its leaders are so afraid of outside governments that they won't let anybody come to Burma, not even to help the Burmese.
The Burmese government is making a terrible situation even worse. It has let the United Nations send some food and medicine, but not enough. The UN is also worried that the military in Burma is taking the supplies for themselves instead of quickly sending them to the people who are suffering the most.
The United States, China, Thailand, and other countries are asking the Burmese government to let relief workers into their country to help the people affected by the cyclone.
I'm Michelle and that's what happened in the world this week.
