Tennis Balls Fly Over Nets at Wimbledon--So Do Pigeons!

The Wimbledon tennis championships will end this Saturday after two weeks of surprises on and off the court. On the court, big upsets knocked out many of the favorites early in the tournament. That included Serbian star Ana Ivanovic, who was the top ranked woman in the tournament and third ranked Novak Djokovic who won the men's championship at this year's Australian Open.

Roger Federer of Switzerland is still in the hunt, hoping to win his record-breaking sixth Wimbledon in a row. Young Rafael Nadal of Spain, his arch rival, and the winner of the French Open, stands in his way. On the women's side, two of the remaining favorites are defending champion Venus Williams and her sister Serena. Venus already set a record with a blistering serve that traveled 127 miles an hour--the fastest serve by a woman in the history of the tournament.

Off the court, news was made in the skies above the All England Club that hosts the championship. Feathers are flying because Wimbledon used sharpshooters to get rid of pigeons they accused of fouling tables and courts. Wimbledon usually controls pigeons by hiring hunting birds, called falcons, to scare them away. While players raise racquets on the tennis courts, an animal-rights group threatened to raise a racket in a court of law. Officials have since called off the sharpshooters.
