Waterfalls Wow New York

Tourists are expected to flock to New York City this summer to see the city's newest public art project, "New York City Waterfalls."

Danish-Icelandic artist Olafur Eliasson created the project, which features four man-made waterfalls located in New York's eastern waterways. The waterfalls range in height from 90 to 120 feet. They flow every day from morning until 10 o'clock at night continually reusing river waters.

No one would mistake these waterfalls for the real thing, but Eliasson says that's exactly the point. He wanted them to blend in with the skyscrapers that New York is so famous for. At the same time, Eliasson also wanted to use the waterfalls to draw attention to the waterways that surround New York. The waterfalls act as a way of reminding New Yorkers that the size of their enormous city is result of the natural water resources that surround it.

More than 108 people, including scientists, engineers, divers, and environmentalists, helped Eliasson with his project. They carefully designed the waterfalls to be environmentally safe. Special devices at their bases keep fish from getting caught inside.

The waterfalls will remain on view until October 13. Until then, New York is gearing up for a heavy tourist season. Special boat tours are being organized to take visitors to the see the spectacular waterfalls up close.

I'm Isaac and that's what happened in the arts this week.
