Exotic and Entertaining Words Enter the Lexicon

Excuse me, could you please pass the edamame? What? You've never heard of edamame? They're the little green soybeans that taste delicious. If you don't believe me, you can look it up. Edamame is also a brand new word in the dictionary.

Every year words are added to the Merriam Webster Dictionary. That's because our language changes all the time. Sometimes we need to invent new words. One example is kiteboarding. It's when someone rides a surfboard using a huge kite and wind to pull the board across the water. Actually kiteboarding has been around since 1996. But it takes a while for some words to catch on.

When we're not inventing new words, we're taking words from other languages. Edamame comes from Japanese. Another new word, Soju, is a Korean vodka made from rice. A funny new word this year is Mondegreen. A Mondegreen happens when someone misunderstands a song lyric and makes it into something else. There are plenty of funny examples of Mondegreens. One example is a song by Bob Dylan. He sang, "The answer my friends," but many people heard, "the ants are my friends." So now when you hear the words wrong in a song, you know what to call it. Keep an ear out for new words; maybe you'll hear some before they make it into next year's dictionary.

I'm Isaac and that's what happened in technology this week.
