Iran and US Hold Talks
For the first time in years, the governments of the United States and Iran are talking. The United States sent a diplomat to Geneva, Switzerland, to join talks between Iran and other countries about Iran's pursuit of nuclear power. There are reports that next month, US diplomats may return in some form to Iran's capital city of Tehran. That's big news because President George W. Bush had said that it was a bad idea to talk to Iran.
In 2002, President Bush called Iran part of an "axis of evil." He named Iran, Iraq, and North Korea as countries that could be a danger to the US. As recently as 2007, the president put a part of the Iranian military called the Revolutionary Guard on a list of terrorist organizations. So why the change now? Many countries are applying economic and political pressure to the Iranians to keep them from trying to build nuclear weapons. That is a goal that President Bush and the US government strongly support.
The US hasn't had an embassy in Tehran since 1979. Back then, Iran had a revolution that led to the current government. They took the Americans in the embassy hostage for over a year before releasing them. Maybe talking to Iran will lead to better relations with the US in the future. I sure hope so!
