Jane Austen: A Historic Author Who Still Inspires

Just who is Jane Austen? While "Becoming Jane," a film inspired by her life, plays now in movie theaters, I decided to find out more about this influential writer.

Austen is one of the most famous female novelists in English literature. And though she lived over 200 years ago in England, her works are as popular as ever.

Austen published six novels in her life. They mostly dealt with the strict social rules of her time. But they are full of romance and humor, too. They all featured strong young women as the main characters.

Many of Austen's novels were made into movies! "Sense and Sensibility" featured Kate Winslet, who went on to star in "Titanic." It's a story about two sisters, one practical and one romantic. Both have difficulty finding love.

Gwyneth Paltrow starred in the movie adaptation of "Emma," a funny story about a girl who plays matchmaker in her town. Emma was also the basis for the modern comedy "Clueless" that starred actress Alicia Silverstone.

Keira Knightley, who played Elizabeth in "Pirates of the Caribbean," played a different Elizabeth in the movie "Pride and Prejudice." In it, her character had to choose between having love or enjoying social status and money.

"Pride and Prejudice" is Austen's most successful novel. It remains one of the best-selling literary novels at Barnes & Noble even today!
