World Cup Heats Up
Last weekend was a ball for soccer fans! The Women's World Cup moved through the quarter finals leaving four teams with a shot at the title. The top ranked United States team defeated England 3-0. The teams were locked in a scoreless tie until the second half. Then in a 12 minute span, Abby Wambach, Shannon Boxx, and Kristine Lilly scored goals for Team USA which blew the game wide open. The US women will play the highly ranked Brazilian team in the semifinals.
In the other semis defending champion Germany will take on Norway. Earlier in the tournament, the German women set a scoring record when they defeated Argentina 11-0. The Norwegian women pulled off a huge upset by defeating the home country China by a score of 1-0 in their last game.
The three week tournament has taken place in five soccer stadiums located in different parts of China. Two games had to be postponed when Typhoon Wipha struck the Chinese mainland. Since then, the weather has been great and so has the soccer on the field. The finals will be played in the stadium in Shanghai (Shang high) on September 30th. The top teams in this tournament will return next summer when they go for the gold in the 2008 Olympic Games.
