Clinton Meets Leaders At The Summit
Last week, former President Bill Clinton met leaders at a conference he started called the Clinton Global Initiative. One thousand leaders from businesses, schools, and other groups gathered in New York City to discuss worldwide issues of critical importance including education, energy, health, and poverty.
This year the country of Norway pledged one billion dollars to help mothers and their babies in developing countries. Brad Pitt promised to give five million dollars to build environmentally friendly homes in New Orleans, where people still need housing two years after Hurricane Katrina destroyed much of the city.
A group in Bangladesh called BRAC said they would give $271 million dollars to help educate young people in Africa and Asia. Since the initiative was launched in 2005 it has raised $10 billion dollars.
At one event on the schedule Clinton was joined by music stars, Bono and Alicia Keys, actor Chris Rock and others at the famous Apollo Theater in Harlem. The group discussed ways that young people can help change the world.
Next year, the summit will be in Hong Kong. Only the people who are invited, and those who did what they promised at this year's can come to the next summit. Mr. Clinton has big plans for that meeting. He wants to discuss how China can help with problems like global warming and pollution.
I'm Michelle and that's what happened in the world this week.
Let's play just the facts and see how much you learned from my story.
