Fashion Industry Tackles Weighty Problem
You've probably heard that being overweight is bad for your health. But did you know that weighing too little is just as dangerous?
The death of a Brazilian model in 2006 was a wake-up call for everyone. The 21-year-old died because she starved herself trying to stay thin. Now, leaders in the fashion industry around the world are taking steps to correct the problem of dangerously thin models.
In Madrid, Spain, and Milan, Italy, models that are too thin have been banned from fashion week shows. In London, England, the British Fashion Council is recommending that only healthy models 16 and over be allowed on the runway. Now, the Council of Fashion Designers of America has taken up the cause a few weeks before New York's Fashion Week in February. Being healthy is a big part of being a beautiful model, said Diane von Furstenberg, president of the fashion council.
Eating disorders affect models and the young people who want to mimic their super skinny look. Anorexia nervosa is an illness where someone stops eating and becomes dangerously thin. Bulimia is an illness where someone vomits up food to avoid gaining weight. Both can cause life-long health problems and sometimes death!
I'm Michelle and that's what happened in our world this week.
