A Day In The Life
African American Boy d) Yes
A slave child’s work day started before sun-up with the sound of a horn or a bell. Children were responsible for a variety of tasks, either working in the field or in the “Big House.” Sometimes children were assigned to one of the master’s children as a hand servant or “play child.” This often meant spending a great deal of time away from their own family. In addition, children still had chores to do around their own houses. This could mean anything from helping their mother prepare dinner, to breaking in the rough cloth shirts so that their younger brother wouldn’t be scratched by the itchy fabric! But like children everywhere, playtime was squeezed in somehow.

What kinds of games would you have played?

a) Lacrosse, football, hide-and-seek.

b) Jacks, rolling hoops, swinging.

c) Handball, stickball, pitching horseshoes.

d) Mumblety-peg, wrestling games, jumping rope.
