Irish Immigrant Boy d) Yes
Like many other immigrants, you would have lived in a tenement building. These apartment buildings were often unhealthy places to live. They were crowded, dirty, with few windows and little or no light and heat. They were usually constructed of wood, which made them vulnerable to fire. Like other Irish domestic servants, however, you might have escaped the tenement by living with the family who employed you.

What would some of your routine chores have been?

a) Feeding the farm animals, fetching water, and churning butter.

b) Belonging to a “trash gang,” watching over the babies, or helping the carpenters.

c) Polishing the silver, emptying slop jars, making beds, and sweeping the street.

d) Tending horses, trapping game, fishing, and hunting buffalo.
