A Day In The Life Header
Irish Immigrant Boy d) Yes
These are just a few of the duties performed by domestic servants. Rising as early as five o’clock every morning, these young domestics would have a variety of tasks to do every day. You might also help the cook in the kitchen prepare three meals a day, plus help serve at tea time. “Slops” were food and human waste thrown into the streets. Ick! Your workday often ended late at night when you might be allowed to eat the family’s leftovers by yourself in the kitchen. You worked seven days a week, earning a small salary of between $4.00 to $7.00 a month. You might get an afternoon or evening off every week, and perhaps a Sunday off every two weeks.

When you did get time off from your chores, what might you do?

a) Visit your family, attend church, or go for a stroll to see the sites of New York.

b) Play “throw-them-off-their-horses.”

c) Play games and have sing-alongs with your parents in the “children’s parlor.”

d) Attend a Saturday night dance, a barn-raising, or a quilting bee.
