As strange sounding as some of these are, these were real tasks that a small slave child might have to perform. Many young children were forced to work at a young age and would often have specific jobs to do, like waving fans in the dining room to keep flies away from the family, or picking up the plantation mistress’s purse or keys if she dropped them.
