Women and the Right to Vote
In the past, American women did not have the same rights as men. They couldn't own property. They couldn't attend the same colleges. And they couldn't vote.
Women activists trying to get the right to vote were called suffragists. Beginning in 1848, they organized and tried to win the vote. It would take over 70 years, but in the end, the 19th Amendment to the U.S. Constitution was passed, giving all American women the right to vote for their government representatives.
