Iraq War Reaches Five Year Anniversary
Five years ago the United States invaded Iraq. Last week President Bush gave a speech about the invasion and what he thinks the US should do about the war. Mr. Bush admitted that when he started the war, he did not expect it would last this long. The war is now one of the longest in American history. Four thousand US soldiers have lost their lives there.
When the US invaded Iraq five years ago, President Bush and other supporters of the war thought it was a good idea for several reasons. They believed that Saddam Hussein, who was the leader of Iraq, was too dangerous to stay in power. His government was very harsh to the Iraqi people, and Mr. Bush said that they had weapons that could be used against the United States.
The plan was to invade Iraq, get rid of the dangerous weapons, and help the Iraqis build a better government. It turned out that there weren't any dangerous weapons, and the new government still needs US soldiers to keep the peace in Iraq. In spite of the high cost in money and lives, Mr. Bush said in his speech that the US must stay in Iraq. He believes that eventually the US will be able to win the war there.
I'm Ben and that's what happened in our nation this week.
