Tibetans Continue Protests Against Chinese Rule
Tibetans have been rioting in China and Buddhist monks have been in the middle of the conflict. It started two weeks ago in Lhasa, the capital of Tibet. March 10th was the 49th anniversary of an uprising there when Tibetans and monks tried to break free from Chinese rule.
After the communist revolution in China, the new Chinese government claimed that Tibet on its northern border was part of China. The Chinese army moved into Tibet. For the next 10 years, the Chinese government took control of that country. The spiritual leader of Tibet was the Dalai Lama.
The Chinese government invited the Dalai Lama to an event, but rumors spread that they planned to kidnap him. On March 10th, 1959, 30,000 Tibetans surrounded the palace where the Dalai Lama lived to protect him. For a week, the Chinese army and the Tibetans had a standoff. During that time, the Dalai Lama sneaked out of Tibet to safety in India.
Every year on March 10th, Tibetans remember that day with protests and demonstrations. This time, the protests in Tibet became riots. The Chinese government has moved in lots of soldiers and arrested hundreds of Tibetans. With the Beijing Olympics coming soon, the world is watching China closely. President Bush has urged the Chinese leaders to talk with the Dalai Lama to try and improve the situation.
I'm Michelle and that's what happened in the world this week.
