Computers and TVs Take Another Step towards Becoming One

It seems like TVs and computers are on their way to becoming one machine. And isn't that what we all want? The latest gear that's trying to make this happen is Apple TV, which was released last month.

Apple TV is a hard-drive that gets connected between your TV and computer. Once it's plugged in, you can stream music or video from their computer and watch it on your TV. The Apple TV drive stores them so that you can watch the videos even if your computer is off.

There are many things that Apple TV can't do, though. It can't record shows from the TV like TiVo. And it can't play back every type of movie format. It works best when people get their movies and music through iTunes, which some folks might find easy, but it has its limits. But maybe Apple TV's biggest drawback is that you have to own a high-def TV for it to work!

Apple TV is just one of several devices that promise to bridge the divide between TV and computer. There's the EVA8000 from Netgear and Microsoft's X-Box. They all allow you to download music and videos onto your computer and watch them on TV. The X-box allows you to surf the Web, but you can't permanently store files on it unless you buy them from Microsoft's store. Unlike Apple TV, the EVA8000 allows you to play almost anything, not just files from iTunes. They're all priced about the same.
