America Fights Back Against the Bulge
Five hundred million dollars have just been promised in a campaign to fight childhood obesity! The Robert Wood Johnson Foundation will spend the money on programs to bring healthy food to kids and encourage exercise.
One out of every three kids under the age of seventeen is in danger of being overweight or obese. The problem is worse in poor neighborhoods where kids get less exercise because they don't have safe places to play. It's also hard to find stores that sell healthy foods like fruits and vegetables in such areas.
Another reason that kids don't eat right might be the constant ads for sugary and fatty junk foods that kids see. A recent study reported that children see thousands of food ads every year! That's over twelve a day and not one of them is for fruits or vegetables!
It's really important to stop obesity because it can cause all kinds of health problems including diabetes, asthma, and high blood pressure. The good news is that because kids change so quickly, a better diet and more exercise can make a huge difference.
One thing kids can do is to cut down on sugary drinks and not watch more than two hours of television a day. Finding fun activities instead of sitting around is a great way to keep your body healthy!
I'm Ben and that's what happened in our nation this week!
Are you ready to fight obesity on your own? Lets put you through some basic training in this week's Just the Facts!
