Republican McCain Readies for Race Against Democratic Nominee
The Democratic primary contest between Barack Obama and Hillary Clinton has been big news for weeks. But when that gets decided, the winner will have to beat John McCain to become president of the United States.
Senator McCain will officially become his party's nominee at the Republican National Convention in early September. But even though he has the nomination all locked up, he has a tough campaign ahead of him if he wants to win the White House. A problem for McCain is that he is in the same party as President Bush, and a poll by CNN showed that 71 percent of Americans disapprove of the way President Bush is doing his job.
To attract as many voters as possible in the fall, Senator McCain is doing what he can to show that even though he's a Republican, he's different from President Bush on certain key issues. Last week he said that he would take action to reduce the pollution that causes global warming. Critics point out that his goals for reducing greenhouse gas fall far short of the bill currently proposed in the Senate.
Senator McCain said that his experience with protecting the environment would make him a better president than Clinton or Obama. In the fall it will be up to all voters --Republicans, Democrats, and Independents-- to decide if they agree.
I'm Ben and that's what happened in our nation this week.
