U.S. Honors Memorial Day and Those Who Died for Us
Did you have nice, long weekend? For most Americans, Memorial Day means time with the family and a break from school and work. But the holiday has a deeper meaning. After all, it's not called Picnic Day or No School Monday! It's called Memorial Day because it's the day we set aside to remember the Americans who died in military service to our country.
Memorial Day used to be called Decoration Day. It started in 1868 because people wanted to remember and honor the soldiers who died fighting for both the North and South during the Civil War. Decoration Day was celebrated with parades, music, and picnics.
Since then, America fought in two world wars and other military actions around the world. Many Americans died in these conflicts. We honor those dead on Memorial Day.
We have another holiday in November called Veteran's Day to honor everyone who served or is serving in the Armed Forces. But Memorial Day honors only those who lost their lives fighting for America.
I'm Ben and that's what happened in our nation this week!
Let's see what you know about Memorial Day! Play Just the Facts!
