W-I-N-N-E-R! Californian Teen wins National Spelling Bee
Top spellers around the country are buzzing about the results of the 80th Scripps National Spelling Bee. It started last Wednesday morning when 286 ace spellers, aged ten to fifteen, took a 25-word test. Then the kids took to the stage. They each spelled a word in front of a microphone in the first round of the bee.
The next day the rounds continued and the competition heated up. Claire Zhang from West Palm Beach, Florida did well, spelling her way successfully through words like paronomasia and cotechino.
Joseph Henares, from Avon, Connecticut made 47th place. Besides the spelling bee, Joseph is also a state finalist in a Geography Bee and won an episode of Jeopardy during its Back to School week.
First place went to Evan O'Dorney from Danville, California. The 13 year old correctly spelled serrefine, which is defined as a small forceps for clamping a blood vessel. Evan survived 13 tense rounds to win. Last year he tied for 14th place. He won a gold cup and $30,000, along with other prizes.
Congratulations to Evan and all the spellers who made it to the National Spelling Bee!
I'm Ben and that's what happened in our nation this week!
