Struggle for Control of Palestine Continues

Fighting erupted among Palestinians as they battled for control of the Gaza Strip last week. The Gaza Strip is a small piece of land between Israel and the Mediterranean Sea. It is one of the Palestinian Territories. The other territories include East Jerusalem and the West Bank.

The fighting was between the two major political parties of the Palestinian government. On one side is the Fatah. The President of Palestine is from this party. His name is Mahmoud Abbas.

On the other side is the political group called Hamas. The people of Palestine elected Hamas to be the leading party of the government. But the US and many other countries believe Hamas is a terrorist group. That's because Hamas thinks it's OK to attack civilians with suicide bombings.

For a while, Fatah and Hamas shared power. But then Hamas started a battle that forced Fatah from the Gaza Strip. They won the fight and now are in control there.

In response, President Abbas called a national emergency and dismissed the Hamas-led government. He also kicked Hamas out from the two other Palestinian territories of the West Bank and East Jerusalem.

Will the two parties find a way to reunite their country? Or are they now separated for good? We'll continue to follow this story as it unfolds.
