Underground Lake May Help End Conflict in Africa

Water may help to end the fighting in the Darfur region of Sudan. For the last four years, there's been a horrible civil war. Over 200,000 people were killed in Sudan and two million people have lost their homes. The fighting is mostly between Arabs and non-Arabs.

Sudan is a country in Africa. Its neighbors include Chad and Libya. The area is very poor. Part of the problem is that a terrible drought left the region with no water. That makes it hard for people to grow crops for food.

Now that might change. Researchers led by an Egyptian geologist found the remains of a huge buried lake! They say it was once the size of Lake Erie, one of the Great Lakes that are between the United States and Canada. Best of all a lot of water still remains underground!

The government of Egypt promised to build the first 20 wells to bring the water up to the people who live there. The geologist who discovered the lake said the lack of water was partly to blame for the violence in Darfur. If they can drill enough wells, it might help stop the fighting. In Egypt, wells help turn dry desert into crops for wheat and other food. Maybe the same can happen in Sudan!
