Video Game Gets Gym Kids Going

When you think of your school's phys ed class, what comes to mind? Soccer? Volleyball? Running endless laps around the track? Well, then you might be jealous when I tell you that in West Virginia, you can play a video game instead!

That's right! Beginning last year, schools across the state began to offer Dance Dance Revolution during gym! DDR, as it's called, swept across the nation in 2001. It's a physically demanding game because there are no hand-held controllers! Players stand on a mat and push four buttons with their feet to the rhythm of popular songs.

When you are keeping up with the fast-paced song, DDR is great exercise. In fact, with repeated use, kids reported losing weight and getting healthier. And this is what got the attention of educators in West Virginia.

DDR makes a great alternative to sports that some kids don't like. Perhaps it's because the competition isn't so intense as it is in basketball or other sports. One student said, "You don't have to be good at it to get a good workout!"

Whatever the reason, West Virginian schools are embracing the program. And the excitement is spreading. DDR can now be found in schools in at least 10 states across America!

I'm Isaac and that's what happened in the arts this week!
