Opera Star Luciano Pavarotti Passes Away
World-famous singer Luciano Pavarotti died of cancer last week at the age of 71. He died at home near his birthplace, the town of Modena in Italy.
Pavarotti's strong, beautiful voice filled the world's biggest opera houses for decades. But his fame went beyond the world of opera. In the 1980s, Pavarotti and two other opera stars formed a group called the Three Tenors. They sang in large stadiums to huge audiences. Pavarotti even sang with rock stars and pop singers such as U2 and the Spice Girls. During his career he sold over 100 million records!
Some music critics didn't approve of Pavarotti's career choices. But others pointed out that Pavarotti's popularity gave a boost to opera. He helped introduce opera music to many people who had never listened to it before.
Pavarotti was also known for being generous. He set up a music center in the war-torn country of Bosnia. He also raised money for the Red Cross.
Pavarotti's life was always filled with music. He sang in a church choir with his father as a boy. At age 20, he became a professional singer. In 2006, he sang at the opening ceremonies of the Winter Olympics. Music critics and fans alike say that Pavarotti's voice sounded like no one else's.
