Chinese President Promises Safer Products

Chances are you and your family use some products that say "Made in China." In recent months, that label has worried many U.S. consumers because some Chinese factories were found to be using dangerous materials in their products.

Some pet foods, for example, contained a substance that poisoned cats and dogs. The same material turned up, in smaller amounts, in some brands of toothpaste. Lead paint, which is harmful to children, was found on many toys. Toy companies warned parents to return the toys to stores.

So when Chinese president Hu Jintao met President Bush at a conference in Australia last week, he was eager to discuss the problem with him. Hu stressed that his government had formed an agency to inspect factories and their products. He said that factory owners using dangerous materials were being held responsible. He told Bush that the wrongdoers made up a very small minority of China's factories.

The two leaders discussed other issues during their hour-and-a-half talk, too. Bush expressed concern about human rights, such as freedom of religion, in China. Bush and Hu also talked about global warming and about Iran's plans to build nuclear weapons.

The presidents even had a chance to chat about sports. Hu invited President Bush to attend the 2008 Olympics, which will be held in Beijing, China. Bush accepted the offer!

I'm Michelle and that's what happened in the world this week!

Let's play the match game and identify world leaders.
