I'd Like to Give the World a Laptop
Can you imagine life without computers? Millions of children in poor countries have never used or even seen a computer. Now, an organization called One Laptop Per Child plans to give many of them one of their very own.
This laptop, called XO, costs about $150 that will be covered by donations. It is designed to be super tough so kids can use them anywhere. XOs can weather harsh physical conditions, including extreme heat and dust in remote jungles and deserts.
XOs were created with needy kids in mind. Some of these kids don't even have electricity. So kids can power up the laptops themselves. They can wind them up, for example! Kids can also use the laptop as a light or television set.
The laptops use a unique, kid-friendly interface nicknamed "Sugar." Users can automatically network with other XOs and can also connect to the Internet.
Some of the first countries to use the XO will include Argentina, Brazil, Libya, Nigeria and Thailand. Theperson who started One Laptop per Child[ID2], Nicholas Negroponte, says he hopes that in 10 years, the XO will connect every child on the planet.
