A-Rod Captures Two Big Prizes

Alex Rodriguez, better known as A-Rod, won his third American League Most Valuable Player award last week. But his biggest prize was a new contract with the New York Yankees that may be worth more than a quarter of a billion dollars!

Last year, A-Rod turned in a spectacular season, slugging 54 home runs while knocking in more runs than anyone else in baseball. At 31, he became the youngest player ever to hit his 500th home run. At his current pace, someday he will pass Barry Bonds and become baseball's all-time home run king.

After his monster season A-Rod took the advice of his agent, Scott Boras, and ended his Yankee contract. He decided the money left on his contract, about $81 million dollars over the next three years, was not enough. When the Yankees said they would not negotiate with him as a free agent, he began to have doubts about his decision. A-Rod and his wife Cynthia met with the Yankees to see if they could work out a compromise.

In the end, things are looking good for him despite the bad way he left the team. The word is that he and the Yankees have agreed to a new 10-year contract that will pay him $270 million or more. That knocks his old contract out of the park!

I'm Lucy and that's what happened in sports this week!
