Presidential Candidates Face Off In Iowa

The race for president picks up steam in Iowa this week as Democrats and Republicans officially begin the process of choosing their candidates. In November 2008, the US will hold elections for a new president. But, before we can vote for president, we must decide who the candidates will be. To figure that out, we have primaries and caucuses. In a primary, people vote in a secret ballot for the candidate they want to represent their party. In a caucus, small groups of voters, get together, talk about the candidates, and choose the person they want to support.

Candidates have been campaigning for months even though the general election is nearly a year away. That's because many states moved their primaries up. Iowa's caucus will be the first on January 3rd. That's the earliest in US history. New Hampshire will hold the first primary five days later. Right now the race in Iowa and beyond is super close. From the Democratic Party, Hillary Clinton, Barak Obama, and John Edwards are competing for the chance to run for president. On the Republican side, Mike Huckabee, Rudy Guiliani, Mitt Romney, Fred Thompson, and John McCain are each hoping to run for president as the Republican candidate. With so many candidates in the race the Iowa caucus and the New Hampshire primary are more important than ever!

I'm Ben and that's what happened in our nation this week.
