Pakistani Political Leader Assassinated

Benazir Bhutto, the former Prime Minister of Pakistan, was killed at a political rally December 28. An attack by a gunman and a suicide bomber killed her and many of her supporters nearby. Ms. Bhutto was running for president of Pakistan in the January elections. This campaign was her return to politics after she lost her job as prime minister in 1996.

Ms. Bhutto was the daughter of Zulfikar Ali Bhutto, who founded the Pakistan People's Party and was once the prime minister and the president of the country. In the 1970s, the Pakistani military took power and had him executed. After her father's death, Ms. Bhutto became the leader of his party. She became the prime minister, but was fired after a few years by the president. She was charged and convicted of corruption for taking money that she shouldn't have, but a higher court said that the conviction wasn't fair and overturned it.

After that, General Pervez Musharraf took control of Pakistan in a military coup. Ms. Bhutto wanted Pakistan to become a democracy, and she returned to politics to run for president. It isn't clear who killed her or why. Many suggest it was al-Qaeda, a terrorist group also operating in Afghanistan and Iraq. This week Bhutto's nineteen-year-old son, Bilawal Zardari, was named the new head of her political party.

I'm Michelle and that's what happened in the world this week.
