Stinky Cheese Author New Literature Ambassador
Jon Scieszka wants you to read. And he wants you to like it. If you don't already know his name, you might know his books. Scieszka is the author of Squids Will Be Squids, The True Story of the 3 Little Pigs!, The Stinky Cheese Man and Other Fairly Stupid Tales, and many other kids books.
Jon Scieszka was named America's first National Ambassador for Young People's Literature by the Children's Book Council and the Library of Congress. It's a two-year job, and his duties include traveling around the country and getting young people excited about reading.
Scieszka wants kids to know that reading should be fun. And he wants teachers and parents to know that it's okay to let kids read what they enjoy. Comic books, science fiction, or fairy tales are all good as far as Scieszka is concerned. He believes that just because a book is funny doesn't mean you can't learn from it too.
Scieszka taught for 10 years before he became a writer. As a teacher, he saw what kids like to read and wanted to write more books that his kids would enjoy. Scieszka also started a program called Guys Read, to get boys interested in reading. Scieszka loves writing, making his audience laugh, but most of all he wants to make them think.
I'm Isaac and that's what happened in the Arts this week!
