SF Zoo Reopens After Tiger Attacks
The San Francisco Zoo is open again after a Christmas Day tragedy shut things down. On December 25th a 350-pound Siberian tiger named Tatiana escaped from her pen, killing a teenager and wounding two other young men. Police then shot and killed Tatiana before she could do any more harm.
People are still trying to find out what made her go wild. The director of the zoo said he thinks something happened to provoke the tiger. There were reports of three men teasing the tiger shortly before she escaped and the attack occurred. If the young men roared and taunted the tiger, it might have made her angry enough to attack.
The wall that kept Tatiana in her pen was also too short. Tigers are supposed to be kept behind a 16 and a half-foot wall, but her's was only 12 and a half feet high. The zoo closed the tiger exhibit and is building a 19-foot wall to keep the big cats away from the people. Last Thursday was the first day the zoo opened after the tragedy. None of the big cats exhibits were open. Visitors put up a memorial with flowers to remember Tatiana and Carlos Sousa Jr., the 17-year-old boy she killed.
I'm Ben and that's what happened in our nation this week.
