Canada Captures World Junior Hockey Championship

Team USA hoped to win a medal for the second year in a row in the World Junior Hockey Championships. But after making medal round, the Americans lost in the semifinals to Canada by a score of 4 to 1. Team Canada went on to capture the gold for the fourth time in a row. This year's tournament was held in the Czech Republic.

The World Junior Hockey Championship is for players under the age of 20. All star teams compete for their country for gold, silver and bronze medals, just like they do in the Olympics. Many of the top players from the different teams go on to play as pros in the National Hockey League.

Team USA and Canada were scoreless until the second period when Shawn Matthias and Alzner both scored to put Canada ahead to stay. Team USA still had a chance to win a bronze medal if they could beat Russia whom they had defeated earlier in the tournament. But after scoring three first period goals, the Russians cruised to a 4 to 2 victory.

Canada won the finals by defeating Sweden, the only team that had won a game from them in the tournament. They won 3 to 2 when Matt Halischuk scored the winning goal in overtime. The Canadian goalie, Steve Mason, was named the tournament's Most Valuable Player.
