Venezuela Re-elects Chavez as El Presidente
In South America, the Venezuelan people have re-elected President Hugo Chavez to another six-year term as president.
Venezuela is a Spanish-speaking country of about 26 million. It is located along the northern part of South America, between Colombia and Brazil. Venezuela is a country rich in oil deposits. Yet, many Venezuelans live in poverty.
President Chavez is popular with the poor because he has promised to share more of the country's resources. The Venezuelan president says he is leading a socialist revolution. Socialism is a form of government where the government controls the means of production like farms and factories. This is the opposite of the United States where most companies are privately owned.
President Chavez has been critical of the Bush Administration in the U.S. He says the U.S. has too much power in the Americas. Bush is worried because Venezuela has a lot of oil that the U.S. needs. If Chavez wants, he can stop that supply. This would make gas and heating your home really expensive!
I'm Michelle and that's what happened in the world this week.
