President Bush Looks Ahead
Last week, President Bush gave his State of the Union address. He makes this speech every January. It was his chance to speak to people in all three branches of the U.S. government. The speech outlined his hopes and plans for the future.
President Bush defended his decision to send 21,500 additional American soldiers to fight in Iraq. "Every one of us wishes this war were over and won," said President Bush. "Yet it would not be like us to leave our promises unkept, our friends abandoned, and our own security at risk."
He also announced several new goals in the areas of the environment and health care. Climate change is a very serious global problem, he said. One way to help reverse the damage, he suggested, is to reduce the use of gas and increase the use of different energies such as ethanol. Ethanol is a fuel made from corn!
The president also recognized that affordable health care was a problem for many Americans. He proposed that people who buy health insurance would get a discount on their taxes.
I'm Ben and that's what happened in our nation this week.
