Super Bowl XLI Will Make History
This Sunday, the forty-first Super Bowl features the Chicago Bears playing against the Indianapolis Colts. Both teams have lots of motivation to win the game. The Bears haven't played in the big game since they won it in 1985. But that's nothing! The last time the Colts won the championship was as the Baltimore Colts in 1970 - 37 years ago!
But, there's another BETTER reason to be excited about this year's game. Both teams have an African-American head coach - Lovie Smith for the Bears and Tony Dungy for the Colts. This is remarkable since an African-American head coach has never made it to the Super Bowl before. In fact, during this past season, there were only seven African-American head coaches in the entire NFL. This is a tiny amount when you realize that a majority of the players in the league are African-American. To fix this problem, the NFL has a rule that teams must interview at least one minority candidate when hiring a new head coach. That has helped the number slowly increase.
Here's another crazy fact about the coaches. They just happen to be close friends! Smith worked for Dungy when Dungy was the head coach of the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.
