Stonehenge Mystery Revealed

Stonehenge, the mysterious circle of giant rocks standing alone in a wide-open field in southern England, has baffled people for centuries. Now the recent discovery of an ancient village nearby may begin to unlock the secrets of this famous prehistoric monument.

Stonehenge is believed to be 5,000 years old. The newly unearthed village is around the same age. Archeologists think that it was home for the workers involved in building Stonehenge. The houses have wooden walls and mud floors. Inside, archaeologists discovered outlines of what appears to be beds and wooden cupboards.

Mike Parker Pearson, leader of the Stonehenge Riverside Project, suggests that the village is proof that Stonehenge was part of a larger complex that was used for religious purposes. Parker Pearson's team also discovered items like prehistoric pig's teeth. This leads them to believe the site was a place for feasting and celebration.

There are many theories about Stonehenge's purpose. Some say it was used for religious rituals. Parker Pearson suggests that because there are so many human remains at the site, it was a spiritual home for ancient people. Others say the alignment of the stones indicates that they may have been used as a prehistoric calendar. What everyone can agree on is that it took a massive effort and a very long time to assemble the stones in the circular shape we see today.
