Library of Congress and Flickr Form a Tag Team
Have you ever seen a picture of a cannon from a hundred years ago? How about baseball players who were pros before your great grandparents were born? You can see that and a lot more in the Creative Commons section of Flickr. Those pictures and over 3,000 others were posted by the Library of Congress.
The Library partnered with Flickr, an online site where users share photos, to see how people would tag the photos. It works like this; any registered user can add a word to go with a picture. So the cannon, which was from Mexico, has words like "Mexico" and "Juarez" which is the city where it was taken.
When Flickr users tag all the photos, it helps the librarians find new ways to classify the picture. Part of a librarian's job is arrange and order all the books, magazines, and pictures in a way that people can find what they're looking for. The Library of Congress is hoping that people will come up with ways to name these vintage pictures in helpful ways. If the project works, even more photos might go online.
So if you want to help out, or even just take a look at what was in the news in the early 1900s, check out the creative commons on Flickr.
