Over 100,000 Colombians Protest Rebel Group
No mas means No More in Spanish, and that's what folks around the world said to the Colombian group FARC last week. FARC is a military group that has been fighting the Colombian government for years. They were started in 1964 and hoped to bring a socialist revolution to Colombia.
Since then, they have fought a civil war that has killed thousands of Colombians. Since it started, FARC has done more than fight the government. They raise money by selling drugs and weapons. They also kidnap people and demand that their loved ones pay money to have them released.
FARC is holding over 700 hostages. Some of them have been held for as long as 10 years. Colombians are tired of having people kidnapped by the group. A Colombian man named Oscar Morales came up with the idea of a protest, so he posted the idea on a web site called Facebook and the idea caught fire. In cities across Colombia nearly five million people joined the protests. There were marches in other cities around the world. For example, 300 Colombians living in Chicago, Illinois, turned up to tell FARC that the kidnappings are wrong.
After the protest, FARC announced that it would release three of the prisoners who were in poor health. But no date has been set yet for their release.
I'm Michelle and that's what happened in the world this week!
