Mercy Rule for Basketball

Have you ever won a game by so much that you felt sorry for the person you beat? Have you ever held back so you wouldn't win by too much? If you did, that means you showed some mercy for the poor kid you were defeating. In high school basketball, sometimes teams are so mismatched that the winners score a hundred points and the losers are lucky to get a few baskets. That's a tough game if you're on the losing side. That's why Montana, like many other states, is considering adding a mercy rule next year.

The new mercy rule would take effect in the second half when a team is trailing by 40 points with no hope of catching up. The clock would keep running during timeouts so that the game would end as fast as possible.

Not everyone likes the idea though. Some coaches think that the players should just do their best, no matter how far ahead they are. They also argue that a one-sided game may give seldom-used players a chance to take the court. Opponents of the rule also argue that, since people pay to attend basketball games, that they are entitled to see a full, regular game no matter what the score.

I'm Lucy and that's what happened in Sports this week!
