Winning Clue: 42 Down -- Adds
I'm thinking of a word. It has nine letters and starts with C. If you guessed crossword, you're right. Last week, the American Crossword Puzzle Tournament came to Brooklyn, New York, for the first time. The last 31 years it took place in Stamford, Connecticut. The tournament lasted a weekend and anyone could enter, but there could only be one champion.
In the first round on Saturday, 699 puzzlers, one more than last year, scribbled away in the first minutes of the competition. Contestants worked on their puzzles and then handed them in. Only those who do well advanced to the next round. And so it went until Sunday, when the crowd was much smaller. Then crosswords were filled in on big whiteboards while an excited crowd watched.
In the final round, the winner was Tyler Hinman who is only 23. It was his fourth year to take the title, but he barely made it this time. Trip Payne, who took second place, actually finished his puzzle before Hinman. But Payne filled out one word wrong for 42 Down. The clue was "Adds". Payne wrote "invests". The correct answer was "injects." So, even though he finished way ahead of the others, Payne lost by two letters to Hinman, who won the $5,000 first-prize.
It was an exciting time for puzzle lovers everywhere.
I'm Lucy and that's what happened in sports this week!
