Tensions Ease in South America

A crisis in South America eased a bit as the presidents of Colombia, Ecuador and Venezuela met last weekend and tried to work out their differences. The crisis started when Colombian soldiers crossed the border into Ecuador to chase rebels from a group called FARC. The rebels from FARC kidnap Colombians and kill soldiers and then hide across the border in Ecuador. When Colombian soldiers followed FARC, they killed the number two FARC commander and some of his followers. Ecuador said that was a violation of its sovereignty. Sovereignty is the right for a country to rule itself, and not have someone else's army within their borders if they don't want it there.

Since the attack, Ecuador had stopped speaking to Colombia. Venezuela took Ecuador's side and sent its army to the border. The three leaders met at a regional summit in the Dominican Republic last Friday. After the meeting, the three presidents shook hands. Colombia and Venezuela agreed to diplomatic relations. Ecuador has not done so yet, since it wants a guarantee that Colombia soldiers will not cross into its territory again. So tensions remain on the border. But everyone is hoping that it gets settled diplomatically, and it's not too late for Colombia and Ecuador to work things out without fighting.

I'm Michelle and that's what happened in the world this week.
