A Storm Brews after Iran Captures British Soldiers
A stormy standoff is brewing between two countries in the Middle East. On March 23rd, Iranians captured fifteen British sailors and marines. Iran claims they were trespassing in its territory. The British Prime Minister, Mr. Tony Blair, said that he is utterly confident that the sailors were in Iraqi waters, not in Iranian waters.
The sailors were in a small boat and were checking other boats for smuggled goods. The British government says that GPS tracking devices in the boat show that the sailors never entered Iranian waters. But, Iran says that they captured GPS devices that proved just the opposite!
Last week, the Iranian government showed a video of the sailors and marines eating and smiling. . Showing video of captured soldiers is against international law. They also released letters written by Faye Turney, the only woman in the captured group. In the letters and in the video, Turney said the Iranians treated her well and she apologized for entering Iranian waters.
Mr. Blair said that the letters and video showed that Iranians forced the sailors to say that. He demanded that the Iranians release the sailors immediately.
While both countries insist they are right, people are working behind the scenes to try to end the dispute before it becomes violent.
I'm Michelle and that's what happened in the world this week!
The countries involved in my story are far from the United States. Let's locate them in this week's Pinpoint!
