High Schools Revive Art of the Poetry Recital

You probably haven't memorized many poems. It has been years since kids were expected to learn poems by heart. But when your grandparents were in school, students learned and recited plenty of poetry. Over the years, educators decided to concentrate on other subjects and poetry was mostly forgotten.

Now that's changing. A project called Poetry Out Loud holds poetry contests in high schools in every state and US territory. Students memorize works by great poets, and then they stand in front of a microphone and give those poems a voice. Fans of the contests say the idea works because reciting poetry is more than just reading. It's a dramatic performance that brings poetry to life.

Last year, over 100,000 students participated. They read funny poems, serious poems, sad poems, even angry poems. The contests started in classrooms, and the winners moved up until they competed at the state level. State winners got $200 and a trip to Washington to compete in the national event.

This year's National Champion was Shawntay A. Henry from the US Virgin Islands. One of the poems that Shawntay read was "Frederick Douglass" by Robert E. Hayden. The poem is about a former slave who worked to end slavery in America. It was a great poem to pick and Shawntay recited it with a winning performance. Congratulations on your win, Shawntay!
