Happiness Survey Shows Some Thriving, Others Just Surviving

When it comes to happiness, is America's glass half full or half empty? It all depends your point of view. Something called the Gallup-Healthways Well-Being Index measured the health and happiness of Americans. Half of Americans said they were thriving, which means they feel like they're doing well. But the other half in the survey said that they are struggling. Many people said they were not well rested, and they often mentioned health problems like high blood pressure or cholesterol.

The survey was the biggest of its kind. Researchers spoke to 100,000 people including many who don't normally participate in polls. For example, they also called cell phones numbers of people who don't have land lines. The researchers spoke Spanish so that they could interview people who only speak that language.

One of the things the poll showed was that when people have more than one problem, it makes them more than twice as miserable. The study also revealed that two-thirds of working Americans are overweight or obese. The survey showed that spending more time with friends and family can be a huge help. Also, having a better work place helps too. If businesses improve their offices, and Americans improve their diets and get more exercise, the next poll might show a much happier America.

I'm Ben and that's what happened in our nation this week.
