British Prime Minister Blair Ready To Step Down

The Prime Minister of the United Kingdom is leaving his job. After ten years as the leader of the British government, Tony Blair said that's long enough.

Mr. Blair became the Prime Minister in 1997. The U.K. doesn't have a president like we do. Instead, they have a prime minister. The prime minister is part of the British parliament. Parliament is similar to our congress.

One difference between the British prime minister and our president is that the prime minister isn't chosen directly by the people. Instead, the people elect him to parliament. Then his fellow politicians choose him to lead the government.

Mr. Blair belongs to a political party called the Labor Party. The other main political party in the U.K. is called the Conservative Party.

One reason Mr. Blair resigned is because he's not very popular with voters any more. Mr. Blair is President Bush's good friend. He supported the invasion of Iraq. Most people in the U.K. think that was a mistake. Mr. Blair said that he thought it was the right thing to do at the time.

When the British occupation of Iraq became unpopular with voters in the U.K., the Labor Party asked Blair to resign. Blair will remain Prime Minister until his party votes for a new leader.
