Smoking: Rated R! Coming Soon to a Theater Near You!
Things like violence and bad language can earn a movie an R rating. Soon, cigarettes might be added to that list!
The Motion Picture Association of America, or MPAA, is the group that rates movies. These ratings are G, PG, PG-13, R and NC-17. Kids your age should be watching PG-13 or below. R and NC-17 movies are for adults only!
The MPAA said that a movie rating now could be affected if it makes smoking look glamorous, or if there's too much of it. That'll push the rating to R.
The Screen Actor's Guild and the American Cancer Society think that it's a good idea to limit the amount of smoking that kids see in movies. Other groups like the American Legacy Foundation think that the MPAA is not going far enough. They would like to see any movie with smoking in it get an automatic R rating.
The reason for the controversy is that when movies show famous actors smoking, it can influence kids and make them want to start smoking. Tobacco companies paid to have their cigarettes in movies as a way of advertising known as product placement. In 1998 they were banned from doing this.
Soon, not only will smoking illegal in theaters, it may not even be allowed on screen!
I'm Isaac and that's what happened in the arts this week!
Let's play Just the Facts and see what rating you earn!
