World Wonder Needs Whitening
One of the wonders of the world needs a facelift! The Taj Mahal is one of India's most beautiful monuments. But it's turning from white to yellow!
The Emperor Sha Jahan built it over 250 years ago. He created it as a tomb for his favorite wife. It took 16 years to finish. The Taj Mahal is famous for its huge dome made from white marble.
Now air pollution is turning the marble yellow. People first noticed the change about ten years ago. So the government closed down nearby factories. It even banned people from driving too close. Tourists now get there by riding in horse-drawn carriages!
But that didn't stop the yellowing. The government now wants to clean the Taj Mahal by putting clay all over it. When the clay dries, it will pull the pollution off of the marble. The treatment will cost 230 thousand dollars, and they'll have to do it every few years.
The good news is that the clay treatment doesn't use any harsh chemicals and won't damage the marble.
The Taj Mahal is up for vote to become one of the new Seven Wonders of the World. Also on the list are the Eiffel Tower and the Kremlin.
Next time you're in India, take a look!
