Rain, Rain Go Away! China Tries to Control the Weather

Have you ever heard the song, "Rain, Rain Go Away! Come Again Another Day?" Well, in China they're not just singing. They're using science to try and make the rain go away for sure!

In 2008, China will host the Olympics. To make sure it's sunny out, the government is trying to control the weather! The Beijing Weather Modification Office is experimenting with different ways to guarantee blue skies.

So far, they haven't made good weather, but they have plenty of experience with making it rain. Scientists spray a chemical called silver iodide into the sky. They do this by using big guns and airplanes. The chemical reacts with the clouds and rain falls down.

Zhang Qiang is the woman in charge of the rainmaking. She thinks that if they cause enough rain to fall before the Olympics, then there won't be any clouds left during them. Also, they think the rain will clean the polluted air.

The Olympics are hosted around the world every four years. Last time, the events took place in Greece. Before that, it was held in Australia.

Will the Chinese' plan work? Keep an eye towards the sky in 2008 to find out!

I'm Adelbert and that's what happened in Science this week!
