Supreme Gamer: Justice to Create Video Game
Do you know more about American Idol than you do about the Supreme Court? If you said yes, then you might need to play more video games. More games? That's the idea a former Supreme Court justice had to help Americans know more about our government.
Sandra Day O'Connor was the first woman to serve on the Supreme Court. That's the highest court in the United States, and its job is to decide if certain laws fit with the rules set down in the United States Constitution. O'Connor believes that every American should understand the role of the executive, legislative and judicial branches of our government, and it bothers her that kids aren't learning enough about them.
O'Connor wants to make new video games that help kids know more about social issues and civics. She's going to work with a college professor to create a game called Our Courts. The game will give players a chance to see what kinds of choices a senator, a judge, or even the president must make.
The game will be about kids in school who want to wear t-shirts with logos their teachers don't like. Players will learn about freedom of expression, what happens when it's challenged, and what kinds of speech are protected.
Fighting for our rights in a virtual court sounds fun. Great idea, Justice O'Connor!
I'm Isaac and that's what happened in technology this week.
